In 2023, Romania saw a notable shift in alcohol consumption patterns, as indicated by data from the National Institute of Statistics. The statistics reveal a marked increase in the consumption of wine and distilled spirits per capita, whereas beer consumption experienced a decline.

According to the figures, there was an increase of 0.9 litres in the average wine consumption and 1.7 litres in average distilled spirits consumption per person. On the other hand, beer consumption dropped by 2.9 litres per person. Non-alcoholic beverage consumption also rose by 5.6 litres per capita.

These consumption trends were influenced by changes in national production and imports. The total resources for beer were notably reduced by 532,200 hectolitres from 2022 levels, with a substantial decrease in beer imports by 33.3%. This led to a 3.4% reduction in beer availability for human consumption.

Conversely, the production of wine increased by an impressive 20.9%, or 803,900 hectolitres, resulting in an overall increase of 541,000 hectolitres in total wine resources. Most of this increased wine production was allocated to human consumption, which rose by 178,700 hectolitres.

In the distilled spirits category, resources increased by 138,500 hectolitres of pure alcohol equivalence, mainly due to more production of liqueurs and other spirits. However, the production of brandy and natural raki declined by 13.5% compared to the previous year, while the consumption of these spirits remained constant.

The category of spirits including whisky, gin, rum, vodka saw an increase in resources by 9,000 hectolitres, even though production dropped by 9.3% and imports increased by 9%. Overall, the average consumption of pure alcohol rose by 6.2% from the previous year, predominantly driven by higher wine and spirits consumption.
